Metatarsal pain is a common condition in the athlete involved in weight bearing sports.  Field sports participants, runners, martial aarts participants, gymnasts and hockey players are all potential sufferers.  Commonly metatarsal pain persists following a bad ankle sprain also, particularly so in ladies who twist their ankles while wearing high heeled shoes as the forces may be transferred to the forefoot region in such footwear increasing stress on the metatarsals.

Strains of the metatarsal joints or the metatarsophalangeal joints can be effectively treated with rest, joint mobilisations and taping.  Careful examination of the injured metatarsals is necessary since stress fractures are not uncommon particularly in the second and third metatarsals.  Unfortunately a longer period of rest or absence from activity is necessary if a stress fracture is suspected.
